The mountaineering equipment you need

The essentials for your single-day or multi-day mountain excursions, from basic clothing to a first aid kit.

Basic equipment for day hikes

  1. Mountaineering backpack 25-35 liters & bags to keep clothes dry or waterproof cover that covers the backpack (poncho)
  2. Waterproof hiking shoes (trekking-hiking-approach)
  3. Mountaineering gaiters
  4. Hiking, trekking socks (wool- synthetic- mixed)
  5. Mountaineering pants (cotton, wool or synthetic, depending on conditions)
  6. Fleece or soft shell jacket
  7. Waterproof top and bottom or poncho (waterproof that also covers the backpack)
  8. Wool or fleece gloves (and spare pair)
  9. Beanie
  10. Hat (winter & summer)
  11. Water container 1– 1.5 lt
  12. Energy snacks (raisins, chocolate, salted peanuts or almonds, etc.)
  13. Headlamp and spare batteries
  14. Sunglasses (and spare pair of myopia – presbyopia glasses) in a HARD CASE!
  15. Knife, whistle & spare laces for boots
  16. Personal first aid kit (especially with medications for possible allergies or other illnesses you may have with simple and understandable instructions for use by others as well as informing the leader)
  17. Sunscreen
  18. TOILET PAPER (perhaps the first thing you put in your backpack)!!
  19. Lip balm

NOTE: in any case bring with you a second set of clothes, comfortable shoes and a water bottle in a backpack or travel bag, for after the hike – mud is not allowed on the bus and no one likes the "authentic mountaineering smell" 😉😎🙃😂 in an enclosed space!


Additional equipment for winter hikes

  1. Mountaineering boots (semi-rigid or rigid)
  2. Thermal underwear top and bottom
  3. Vest (jacket with natural or synthetic down)
  4. 2 pairs of waterproof, thermally insulated gloves
  5. Crampons
  6. Ice axe


Additional for two-day/multi-day hikes & overnight stays in the outdoors

  1. Backpack 40-60 liters (whether you stay in refuges or outdoors, try to have the smallest and lightest possible backpack)!
  2. Tent
  3. Sleeping bag
  4. Sleeping mat
  5. Aluminum foil blanket
  6. Lightweight or dehydrated food, soups, tea, etc.
  7. Cooking utensils (camping stove, pot, plate, cup, spoon, fork)
  8. Matches or lighter and paper for kindling
  9. String for hanging wet clothes
  10. Sewing kit (thread, needle, etc.)


Where rope safety is required, the following are essential:

  1. Harness
  2. 6mm diameter cord tied for self-tightening
  3. 2 sewn 60cm slings
  4. 2 safety carabiners
  5. Helmet
