How to prepare your backpack

Proper positioning keeps the weight close to the back, makes essentials accessible, and protects fragile items.

A properly loaded backpack makes the journey more comfortable, safe and restful. If you are new to hiking or mountaineering, follow the simple guidelines below and you will avoid the most common mistakes.

The basic triptych

  1. Heavy items close to the back and approximately at waist height.
  2. Soft items = bottom. Sleeping bag, change of clothes line the bottom of the bag.
  3. Light items low and high to fill the gaps.

This way the weight stays close to your body, improving balance and reducing strain on your shoulders.

How to position your equipment

  1. On the bottom: sleeping bag and mat, preferably in a compression and waterproof bag.
  2. In the center, close to the back: the heaviest items (water, stove, food, cooking utensils).
  3. Perimeter: clothes and light equipment that fill the gaps.
  4. On top or in external pockets: first aid kit, flashlight, raincoat, knife, snacks and anything you need immediately.
  5. On external straps: walking stick, ice axe or other long equipment.

Finally, tighten all straps so the load does not shift while walking.

Useful tips

  1. Use compression bags for sleeping bag and clothes.
  2. Protect electronics and clothes with waterproof bags.
  3. Always carry a backpack cover – it takes up minimal space and can save you from a sudden downpour.
  4. Keep water easily accessible without having to open your backpack.
  5. Take only equipment you know how to use (map, compass, GPS etc.).
  6. Prefer multi-purpose items to save weight and space.
  7. Always carry a whistle, and have emergency phone numbers (112, club president) saved on your phone.

Leave No Trace

  1. Whatever goes up the mountain comes down with you. Take back all your trash.
  2. If you are staying overnight, keep food away from the tent and backpack so as not to attract animals.
  3. Respect the natural environment and leave it exactly as you found it.

A well-organized backpack means less fatigue, greater safety and more enjoyment on the mountain. Happy hiking! 🏔️🎒
